Housing advocates push for rent control
Amid rising rent prices and the number of corporate-owned rentals increasing, Charlotte-area advocates are pushing for rent control. Most states have laws that ban cities and counties from passing rent control measures. The Carolinas passed rent control bans in the 1980s, but with skyrocketing rent, a group called ActionNC is hoping to change that. According to a RentCafe study, the average rent for a Charlotte apartment in July 2022 was $1,639. In July 2019, the study says it was around $1,200. Alameda Co Sup Nate Miley Goes Of On Oakland City Council On Violence, Calls Emergency Meeting Alameda County Supervisor District Four Nate Miley posted this on Facebook yesterday: I call on the Council President to convene an emergency meeting to address lawlessness in the City of Oakland. On Sunday, Dr. Lili Xu was murdered in broad daylight in Oakland’s Little Saigon neighborhood. I offer my most sincere condolences to her family and the API community who has experienced yet another tragic and avoidable loss of life. As a longtime Oakland resident, I am very disappointed in the Oakland City Council President and Councilmembers for their failure to ensure public safety in this City as a core responsibility of City government! Their lack of a comprehensive public safety plan for this City is disgraceful! While they have supported violence prevention in the past, it is important to both look up stream as well as ensure intervention. The Council’s historical failure to support Oakland Police Department for enforcement of the law is an example of the "chickens coming home to roost" with this continued public safety crisis in our City. I am tired of paying high taxes and not getting core services; like public safety. It angers me! I wish you would get angry and say you are mad as hell, and you are not going to take it anymore. Allyssa Victory Demands Oakland Put Her On Oakland Mayoral Ballot, Filed Complaint - OAKLAND, CA -- Allyssa is legally qualified for the ballot based on the filings already submitted to the Clerk’s Office and must be placed on the November ballot immediately. Allyssa submitted 100 nomination petition signatures and 11 endorser signatures at the time of her filing. The Clerk’s Office deemed Allyssa’s 50 required nomination petition signatures sufficient. Nomination signatures are explained at O.M.C. section 3.08.040: “For city-wide offices, nomination petitions shall bear the signatures of not less than fifty (50) nor more than one hundred (100) registered voters who are residents of the city.” However, the signatures identified as “insufficient” were endorser signatures. The Clerk’s Office deemed the endorser signatures insufficient because less than ten were verified as registered voters. However, the endorser signatures are only required by O.M.C section 3.08.080: “Such statement shall also contain the signatures and addresses of not less than ten (10) nor more than twenty (20) residents of the city sponsoring such candidate, who need not have signed such candidate's nomination petition.” Nowhere does the City code require that the endorser signatures be registered to vote, verify as Oakland voters by the Registrar, or use the address that the signer registered to vote with. The signatures were collected on a separate form requiring no affidavit of the circulator as nomination petitions do and the document title directs candidates to collect signatures of “residents of the City of Oakland sponsoring my candidacy.” Allyssa met the requirement in filing 11 endorser signatures who each provided their signature and Oakland residence. Verified endorser signatures is not supported by the city code. Requiring verification also violates the public policy of the distinction in signature types and deprives non-voting residents from the opportunity to be represented as sponsors of candidates. —————————————————————————-Allyssa's filings cannot be disqualified for failure to meet a requirement not actually required by law. The City has now delayed over a week further prejudicing Allyssa who has paused full campaigning while she ensures that she will appear on the ballot. The City Attorney’s Office acknowledged Allyssa’s urgent written request submitted Tuesday August 16, 2022 but has since refused to provide a complete response and has attempted to shirk responsibility by claiming that it has no authority over its elections or its our municipal code. The City Attorney’s Office has wholly refused to even respond with a decision on her ballot name despite the the City Clerk’s office having required that Allyssa submit an additional affidavit for a decision by the City Attorney’s Office. On August 23, 2022, Allyssa filed an elections complaint with the Secretary of State’s Office seeking review of all issues she has attempted to reasonably resolve with the City. The City’s lack of leadership and accountability is on full display and we are seeking a just and fair election which requires Victory be on the ballot. Why Did CNN Use Trump Fist Pump Video In News Segment On Mar-A-Lago FBI Raid? At first, it seemed like nothing. A random news segment about the update on the legal and political conflict that has developed in the wake of the FBI Mar-A-Lago Raid. But then I wondered why Trump doing that was presented on CNN? So, I typed “trump fist symbol” in Google search, and discovered that Trump doing just that was a thing. Moreover, it is considered by some as a kind of call to arms or acknowledgement of his extreme right wing support groups. In 2017, January 23rd, the great blog Daily Kos called it “Anchoring”, and explains that it as associated with “a particular aroused emotional state in the subject.” The Urban Dictionary calls it the “Trump Power Fist” and says it is like the Black Power Fist (really different). The Black Power Fist is done with the arm raised high over the head and in the air. Trump has never done that. But that’s beside the point. The question is why did CNN show it? Who at CNN made that call? And why? I personally don’t believe it was an accident. Stay tuned.
