2006 Europa Pro Show - Judge List Mostly Male

"fbbhubby" reports on 2006 Europa Pro Show judges on the GeneX message board:

I asked Gary Udit for the judges names also. He gave me these names, but didn't know exactly who was on the panel and didn't think the head judge (whoever it was) knew either. Not much help. Couldn't get e-mail addresses for most and the ones I e-mailed for feedback didn't reply. At the competitors meeting, it was stated that the e-mail addresses are on the website, but that isn't true.

What Separates Bodybuilders, Fitness and Figure Competitors?

Really though, is it the diet? The training? The individual? Or a combination of all three? That was the awesome question posted in the GeneX Forums last week.

If you're not already a member, the boards are a great place to learn anything and everything about the ever-growing sport of Women's Bodybuilding.

Some of the answers that peaked my interest are as follows:

"Annie" a trainer of both bodybuilders and figure competitors said:

It depends on the woman as to how they will respond to weight lifting and given that response where THEY personally want to take it. I looked like a bodybuilder the minute I started lifting years ago; I am a mesomorph. I train a woman, Rachael McMillan who is very similar in body type to myself and she responds just as well. She is a bodybuilder. I also train a woman who trains WITH Rachael and I and she trains just as hard as us. She does not build large amounts of muscle easily. She is a figure competitor.

The figure competitor (Sonya Garner) does the same exact workouts as Rachael and I but of course with lighter weights; however she is still lifting as heavy as she can personally lift. I adjust her workouts just weeks before contests, less sets...but that's just for a few weeks. She busts her ass with cardio...very high intensity...no low heartrates here. Rachael and I do the same. Sonya diets harder than us because she holds stubborn fat on the upper hamstrings.

In my opinion, it depends on the body type of the individual. Just because someone is 'smaller' does not mean that they do not train as hard to achieve their desired look. If some of the ladies do not train as hard because they will get 'too big' then maybe they should have chosen bodybuilding, who knows? If those 'figures' are easy for some women to attain and they do not have to train as hard, God bless them! I'll leave it at that.

"Babydoc" said her training has changed dramatically since she switched from figure to fitness:

For fitness, my workouts are specifically designed to help me with my routine; I need endurance and power to do quick, explosive movements as well as a very strong core to execute the strength moves/presses. In addition, I have on average 4-5 hours/week of gymnastics and routine practice per week.

With fitness, I also have to keep a very tight rein on my weight during the offseason--as I have to continue to tumble and work on new routine skills/elements. As you might imagine, it is very difficult to flip around and to hold your body weight up on your hands if you are carrying a lot of extra weight!

A competition diet for fitness requires more carbs and fats than a figure or bodybuilding diet since we need energy to perform a two minute routine. The weight loss must be very gradual in fitness since the routine practices get more intense as the weeks go by.

In fitness, our physiques are permitted to be a bit more muscular and harder than the figure girls. This is a result of the fitness routine training. It's darn near impossible to do a strong fitness routine and maintain the level of "softness" that the NPC/IFBB likes to see in figure.

Other folks said that the main differences for them, since switching, was diet. Most seemed to agree that other than a change in caloric-intake, they still lifted as much as they could year-round.

Sarah Dunlap At The Europa Pro Show

Sarah Dunlap, originally uploaded by genexmagazine.

Generally known for size and definition, Sarah Dunlap presented an entirely different look for the Europa Pro Show. Here's she's certainly the thinest that I've ever seen her. If you look at her and Collete Nelson, to name two, it seems that some of the women most known for size and defintion were deliberately aiming for a look much more in the area of "figure" than "bodybuilding" -- a sign of things to come??

Kim Perez At The Europa Pro Show

Kim Perez, originally uploaded by genexmagazine.

Here's totally ripped Kim Perez, who also was the focus of the controversy at the Europa Pro Show as some congradulated her on her overall muscularity and definition, yet she did not win, place, or show.

Heather Foster Wins 2006 Europa Pro Show

6D6E4736, originally uploaded by genexmagazine.

In a night of controversy, Heather Foster -- middle -- won the Europa Pro Show in Arlington, Texas. To the right is Colette Nelson and to the left is Dena Westerfield.

Even though the judging may have been questionable, a good look at the winners does reveal a consistent muscular style. Even though I think only women should judge the contest, the men were not as uneven as some claim in my view.

Colette Nelson Did Her Homework - Controversy At The 2006 Europa Pro Show; Time For Women Judges

Colette Nelson, originally uploaded by genexmagazine.

It's all over the message boards from GeneX to Unrealmuscle. Observers are bashing the decisions of the judges at the Europa Pro Show.

The basic overall criticism is that the winning women, starting with Heather Foster, all lacked well-defined legs. As one poster put it:

That said, if the lady bodybuilders had known that Heather Foster's thick midsection and smooth quads were going to take #1, perhaps none of them needed to diet at all. WHAT were the judges looking for? Collette has personality and beauty, but this is a BODYBUILDING contest - - not a beauty pageant.

All three of the winners lacked LEGS! I guess a top hat and cane or a slinky blue dress can overcome the lack of calves and quads (future competitors, take note!)"

And it goes from there.

The one voice no one's heard from is that of the judges themselves. As for me, I didn't attend the event, and totally object to the domination of the male in the judging ranks. Indeed, it may be time to have all women judges for female bodybuilding. More and more, we're seeing a group of men as judges that seem to be threatened by a really well-defined and muscular woman. It's almost as if there's a kind of culture war underway.

As for Colelte, I think she may have known what the judges were looking for, as her legs -- especially her thighs -- have been bigger in the past. Perhaps she did her homework, but still only got third place.

I'm going to congradulate Heather Foster on her victory. She's certainly and arguably balanced in her build, but Tazzie's a hard one to pass up in my view.

I think so.

That's right. You saw it here first. Jody May's new chest job's amazing and effectively balances out her body, with her large and shapely biceps and hard and muscularly sexy legs. With this new body, my prediction is that Jody will not only win the Nationals, but become the next big thing in Women's Bodybuilding.

Now, I've seen the new Jody, but there's no picture yet that's captured her.

Cindy Phillips Gets Ready For The 2006 Canadian Nationals

The 2006 CBBF Canadian Bodybuilding Championships is set for September 15-16, 2006 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and female bodybuilding internet queen Cindy Phillips has been training with a laser focus toward the event.

This picture, from her popular blog, shows how ready the 5-1 blone bombshell is. Cindy Phillips tells her fans that she's working to add more mass to her legs. She's also reports "Physically, mentally, emotinally and financially- it occupies every bit each of those things. The money, the sacrifice and the dedication is becomung too much."

This is a common problem in the Women's Bodybuilding community and the cost of training and competing, the hours, and the lack of sponsorship money from mainstream sources add up to clear frustration for even the most determined athletes. Cindy's fans give her all the support they can, but -- how many times have we who care have said it? -- it's time for a Women's Federation, well-financed enough to produce it's own shows and collect sponsorship assistance revenue.

It's doable. Something should be done before the Cindy Phillips of the world become just a memory. If you want to help Cindy pay for her training budget, you can join her site with a click here.

Here's a clip of Cindy Phillips training hard:

Are the Women so sure their are going to be any Pro shows for the FBB to compete at.

Jana Tan..gone.
Charlotte Pro..gone,
NOC...gone.
New York...gone.
Atlantic Pro...who knows if it has staying power yet,

and the Europa show again is not having the turn out need by the FBB to keep it around. From a Promoters point of few that loves FBB, I am just tired of supporting a sport that the FBB do not enter.
Steve Weinberger (New Yourk Pro) said it best...the FBB do not care to compete, why should we put up any money that could go to the other classes that do show up !

The Women that are not cometiting, be prepared in 07 to look around and their is nothing left to qualify at.

To not support the only Female... (Betty) giving back, is a disgrace and I ask the questions, if it doesn't start with the FBB, then how can you ask others to support.

With over 75 registered Pro FBB, you get maybe, 13 in a show..you once had Promoters that were willing to put up cash, the story in 07 is yet to written, but if more money is on all the others events, and gone is the FBB divison, the Women must hold some of the blame.

Every single FBB that has decided not to step on stage this year...Get ready for a ghost year in 07.

You earn your way to the Arnold & the Olympia, and very few want to do that.

Some ask how can I stand next to Yax or Iris ? It took them over 10 years to get better, and over 25 shows each. They both got 15 place at some early shows. How does a Man step on stage next to Ronnie ? Compete, get better and earn your way like the girls that have come before you. This new attitude of some FBB just makes you lol.

This is the Pro ranks, you start all over, just like going from college to the NFL, the good pay their dues at the smaller shows and earn their way to step on stage with the best in the World. No money involved ? who told you their was...Being the best at something you have earned is not always about money. The sport is what it is, and still whatvever the pay, the Pro Women are still the best Women in the World...thats why you stand on stage in this sport.

Thanks to all the FBB Women that step on stage this year and support your own sport..to the others...look around in 07, you might be getting ready for nothing.

Amy Schmid - An Up And Coming FBB

Gene and James at FTVideo.com are really the first to discover this young new comer to the Women's Bodybuilding Scene -- their profile is linked to here.

In her own words, Amy explained how she got into the sport:

"People always ask me how I got into bodybuilding. Well, it's actually a good story. I grew up playing every sport I could. Then, after high school, I somehow got a rare neurological disease called Gullian-Barre Syndrome. Basically, a tiny germ got into my immune system causing it to attack the mylan sheath from around my nerves. By the time I was diagnosed, I was in a wheelchair and unable to stand and I didn't have feeling in my arms or legs. I was told it could be 6 months before I was walking again and may never make a full recovery. After spending a week in the hospital and a little over a month in rehabilitation, I was released as 'normal'. Because I was nowhere near my personal 'normal', I started working in a gym. That's where I learned about food, muscles, weight training and molding a body. One year and 4 months after I was diagnosed I competed in my first show.

Bodybuilding is my passion and my lifestyle. It's a challenge, a test of determination, discipline and scientific knowledge. It takes dedication and a ton of support from friends and family.

I really want to thank Scott and Eve Ann for their never ending generosity, support and wealth of knowledge. I want to thank my bodybuilder boyfriend, Jack Oehlers, who keeps me focused and is there for all of the good and bad days. Thanks also goes out to my mom and two sisters who deal with all of my wacky diets and still love me."

Video - IFBB Judge Jim Rockwell, Jonny Tuman, and Matt Crane Talk About Women's Bodybuilding

In this video produced by "Muscle Mayhem", IFBB / NPC judges Jim Rockwell, Jonny Tuman, and Matt Crane talk about where Women's Bodybuilding is headed. Among other comments, Jim Rockwell says that it's "ridiculous" for women to take time off to gain mass before a contest.

They also state that they want to see "new blood" which should send a message to anyone just entering the sport. Lastly, they want to see women who look more like women than men.

Note that, like the vast majority of judges in Women's Bodybuilding, all are male.

Here's the video...

Johanna Dejager Gaining In Popularity - Video Shows Why

Canadian female bodybuilder Johanna Dejager's gaining in popularity because of her interesting combination of blonde beauty and raw muscle power. A mix that has Kristy Hawkins as a perenial favorite as well. To be sure, it's not that they're blonde but more the total package and especially their amazingly peaked biceps. I can think of few other female bodybuilders who seem to generate so much excitement among fans.

Here's Johanna:

Women Bodybuilders, Winstrol, and Side Effects - Just Don't Use It

This post should be considered a warning to any female bodybuilder who is using or is considering the use of a drug called Winstrol. The simple request I make -- heck, I beg you to pay attention to this -- is to not use it. The reason for this is simple: constant use could cause the tendons of the very muscles you are working to build to weaken and eventually fall apart. That's right, just plain collapse.

I can't explain how I know this only that it happened to someone I know and after several years of constant use of the drug. It turns out that many top female bodybuilders use this drug and its use continues unabated apparently.

That's dangerous.

What's particularly interesting is that this negative impact on tendon use isn't even listed as a major side effect when I looked up the possible adverse impacts of its use in general or for women...

I found...

"Acne or oily skin; enlarging clitoris; hoarseness or deepening of voice; irregular menstrual periods; unnatural hair growth; unusual hair loss."

This problem is just not listed there at all regardless of gender -- tendon damage happens to men and women. In fact, there's one online paper which implies that the impact of constant use of Wistrol is not clear.

Well, don't believe it. It's clear. This is your warning.

If you know of anyone who sells this who's not a doctor, they should not, but that's another story. Make sure they've told you each and every possible bad thing that could occur with repeated annual long term use of Winstrol.

interestingly I did find this sentence -- after a lot of deliberate digging -- offering a voice of reason in explaining why one should not use Winstrol:

"Winstrol increases collagen synthesis. It will give you bigger tendons. However, your body compensates for this by making them more brittle, weaker, and more prone to injury. I can't tell you how many bros work out anaerobically and become injured while on winstrol. Guys who lift in the 1-5 rep range while on winstrol, to baseball players who sprint all out from a stationary position -- winstrol should be the LAST drug they choose. Most of them like winstrol because they don't get the weight gain from it but it is very detrimental to bros who train for any sport anaerobically. Tendons tear easily on it. "

The sentence was on this bodybulding message board page set specifcally dedicated to the use of Winstrol -- and no, it wasn't in celebration.

Collete Nelson Proves That Men Really Do Like Buffed Women

In this video Collete Nelson proves that men really do like buffed women. She's talking to a couple of men on the street in New York City -- there's no sound in this video but it's obvious -- when one of them asks her to flex -- so she does.

Arnold Classic 2007: Of Four Bodybuilding Events, Three Are For Women!

The constant growth of Women's Bodybuilding is evident in the number of women's bodybuilding events to be held at the Arnold Classic in 2007. Of four bodybuilding events at California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's event, three are devoted to women: Women's Bodybuilding, Fitness, and Figure, and the event has a new amateur program.

Heather Policky Gets Ready For Las Vegas NPCs

Dieting, lifting, and generally forming herself into a form not unlike this picuture, the ever-popular Heather Policky's getting ready to compete in the upcoming Las Vegas NPC contest. Heather thinks she's still heavy, but I totally disagree. Still, she's working to drop more pounds and look even tighter than she already does.

Melissa Detwiller Improves Her Body - Strong Finish In NPC Jr Nationals Has Many Projecting Her As Most Improved FBB

Melissa Detwiller is certainly the most business-savvy female bodybuilder, even if her sex-based (not, as in showing sex-acts, just in presenting her freakly-awesome body in revealing clothes) marketing approach stirs the emotions of some of her more "closed and confused" competitors.

(Also Mel has an incredible website and internet marketing approach. Everyone should study it.)

But Melissa Detwiller may finally have reached the point where her bodyshaping process is transforming her into one of the best female bodybuilders.

A look at posts over at "Unrealmuscle" shows that fans are reacting to the constant improvement in the muscularity and definition her body expressed at the NPC Jr. Nationals. I personally think Mel should work on her biceps, with an eye toward adding an inch. Her legs are very well-formed. With this constant improvement, a pro-card is in the future for Melissa Detwiller.

Johanna Dejager Shows How To Build Shoulders - Video

Johanna Dejager is a Canadian National fbb with a killer website at http://www.johannadejager.com .

As her profile reads: "I was born in a small town just outside of Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) and spent my early years growing up in the surrounding area on a dairy farm.

With growing up on the farm came a lot of responsibilities. The chores were shared between the family members and there wasn't much time left over for any after school activities. So, for the athletic department, I did not develop a specific talent for any sport. But I was particularly good at certain track events that required brute strength i.e. shot put or discus but I recall soccer and field hockey something that I enjoyed during regular gym classes. I did alot of horseback riding, swimming and cycling during my spare time at home. I have always attributed my bodybuilding base from the hard work on the farm.

I didn't go to a gym until collage and just trained on and off for a few years until I went to a local bodybuilding show and friends convinced me to give it a try. So I decided to get a bit more serious.

What I enjoy the most from the weight training is the elated feeling after a work out - the bodybuilding shows are a bonus and a challenge. The competitions give me a goal and something to push me a little harder in the gym everytime I walk through those doors.

I will always train even if I do not compete in bodybuilding shows. I truly believe - 'what you put in is what you get out'. Bodybuilding is a great experience."

Below, Johanna shows how she works out her shoulders.

"GetBig" Message Board Attacked As Unfriendly Toward Women

The owner of Femuscle.org has launched an attack against "GetBig", a message board reported to be hostile toward women athletes. What George Legeros, the owner of Femuscle.org wrote can be seen here, and below (in case the link goes bad for some reason.)

Internet Message Boards and Forums
Where unfortunately in some places Hate Rules

The Internet can be a wonderful place. With almost an infinite number of places to visit for entertainment and to gain information and knowledge, it may well be considered the King of Media edging out television and radio from their top positions. That being said, one must be prudent in their search for entertainment and information as "minimum standards of acceptability" do not exist, and censorship on the Internet becomes the responsibility of the person "surfing the net". The use of surfing filters and blocking mechanisms are our "last stand' against Internet hatred or otherwise unacceptable and offensive materials...but first and foremost is knowledge!

Hate is a very strong and destructive emotion. Unfortunately, it's pervasive on the Internet and there is no single solution for censoring it. In the United States, we enjoy our constitutional right of freedom of speech, and the right to free thinking. Censorship, in almost any form is not acceptable to most of us. That being said, I truly believe that "just because we may have the right to say something, doesn't mean it's the right thing to say"!

Internet Message Boards and Forums are places for people to find information on a certain subjects and share opinions and ideas. There are many such places relating to the bodybuilding industry and most at least try to have a modicum of decency and decorum. Many boards use Moderators in an effort to maintain civility while others remain un-moderated, and as such, there seems to be an "anything goes" mentality.

As this is a website whose primary focus is on the Women's side of the sport, I find it necessary to point out that there are many Message Boards and Forums who are "women friendly". This is not to say that all opinions must be positive relative to women's bodybuilding. No one should look at this sport through "rose colored glasses" and criticism can be a good thing if done responsibly. On the other side of the spectrum, unfortunately I see a need to speak out against those Message Boards and Forums, who would consciously or not, approve of, or allow its members to constantly spew vile messages of hate and disrespect towards women athletes.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest and most well known message board, Getbig, in my opinion, falls into this category. As a previous member, I found the amount of mean spirited, negative, and hate driven posts against female and male athletes to be so overwhelming, that I have asked to be removed from it's data base as I refuse to post there any longer. Getbig has gotten out of control, and the veiled attempt by the owner to rectify the situation can not be taken seriously as it appears that some of their own Moderators, by their own inaction alone, appear to not only support but in fact perpetuate the disgraceful, mean spirited, demeaning, and down right libelous remarks posted by certain members. Opinions are one thing, but women bashing and slander seem to be a favorite past time and the norm there.

I am therefore appealing to you readers and calling for a boycott of Getbig and any other forums that disparage women. I am asking that all women athletes and their supporters and fans boycott such forums until such time as they clean up their act and discipline/ban any members that continue such behavior.

There is a choice! There are other Message Boards and Forums on the Internet where this type of mean spirited behavior doesn't exist and/or is not tolerated. "Women Friendly" boards allow the women athletes, their friends and fans, to enjoy free exchange of ideas and opinions, both possitive and negative, without resorting to "low life" comments. A few that I highly recommend are: MuscleMayhem, GeneX, and Tre' Scott's FemFlex forum for women.

While I still have issues with many forums, and their apparent inability to remain independent and operate autonomously without caving in to pressures from federations and/or other entities that would stifle the free dissemination of information by attempting to dictate what information a forum site should or should not allow to be posted, they do not appear to be disrespectful to women….but that is another discussion. The bottom line….don't lend your affiliation or support in terms of becoming a registered member or supporting sponsors of Getbig or any other message board or forum that permits the disparagement of women by it's members until such time as they get their acts together. Boycott them...send them emails voicing your opinion of their board. You do have a choice, and you do have a voice. Let your voice be heard loud and clear!

Sarah Dunlap Photographed On 18th and Ashland in Chicago

Someone took this cool black and white shot of bodybuilder Sarah Dunlap as she was passing out cards promoting a gym at 18th and Ashland Avenue in Chicago. It's an arresting photo and the response to it just shows how popular women bodybuilders are around the World.

From her blog Sarah reports:

"Hello all.... I am updating this blog to let everyone know that I am now about fourteen weeks out of the Europa Supershow. Any and all help through sponsorship would be greatly appreciated at this time. I plan on standing tall as a top contender at the Ms. Olympia this year. I have been training my ass off. I am weighing 180 lbs right now... abs are visible and each day I am getting harder.

I only started to clean up my diet this week, and in this week, my body is already going through huge changes. So also, for anyone who checks in with the herbiceps Webcam chats, I shall be making a more regular appearance.

Thanks for all of your support on my websites and all of the wonderful comments I have received via email."

I've also included this video of Sarah produced by "TomNine."

What Women Bodybuilders Can Learn From Paris Hilton

(Paris Hilton on the Ellen DeGeneres Show)

Female bodybuilders have the most to gain from this method as they represent a sport where their success is based on what people see when they look at them. Some bodybuilders gain money from this process -- all wish to earn money from it. Where female bodybuilders can gain is by creating advanced buzz for who they are. Now what do I mean? I'm stating that -- and this is a theory as it's not common practice by far -- a female bodybuilder can actually impact what the judge or judges in a bodybuilding contest think of their "look" by becoming so popular that by the time they reach a contest, the judges would believe that the most well-known of the contestants should be the winner.

My evidence that this approach can work is based on the recent decisions of food-and-supplements-seller GNC and the International Federation of BodyBuilding (IFBB) to reduce the support of female bodybuilders and limit the "amount" of muscle they can build. The charges have been that people don't like "overly muscular" women. But this claim is countered by the huge number of websites featuring female bodybuilders and fitness models. My cursory count is that there are about 400 websites and thousands of photos online. Indeed, a look at Yahoo! Groups reveals several groups about women bodybuilders that serve over 10,000 members, each. These are some of the largest groups in the Yahoo! system.

While some may argue that the Yahoo! example points to the "oversexualization" of the sport of female bodybuilding, one can offer the counter-example of Women's Tennis star Anna Kornikova, who's profile increased substantially when sports talent agency Octagon marketed her sex appeal, with everything from a website with her most "interesting" photos to calendars and clothes. And then there are the websites that feature any number of near-X rated photos of the tennis stat. With Anna's celebrity, It definitely wasn't the tennis. Just as with Paris Hilton's celebrity, which had nothing to do with any industrial skill she might have. ...click for the full article
